Eighth-Seed Argentine Holds Off Gambill

Juan Monaco of Argentina showed his prowess on slower surfaces to beat American Jan-Michael Gambill 7-5, 6-4 on Monday night in the first round of the U.S. Clay Court Tennis Championships.
The tournament also lost its top seed Monday when Andy Roddick withdrew because of a hamstring injury that he 'tweaked' again in Davis Cup play last week. Roddick has played in five of the past six finals in Houston and won three of them.
The eighth-seeded Monaco moved with more agility on the green clay than did Gambill and he broke the American's serve twice in the first set and again to start the second. Read more
